5 Best Bars and Cafes To Visit in Jalan Besar on a Weekend

Jalan Besar food

Whether you’re looking forward to the Friday nightcap with friends or are itching for that long-postponed weekend trip to where the tasty treats flow, free up your days off and hit the road to Jalan Besar.

The ”Big Wide Road” between Lavender and Little India is not just for football fans and cultural heritage pleasure. Now an official conservation area, besides the Instagram-worthy architecture, captivating murals, and beautiful shophouses, the food and drinks are an explosion that shouldn’t be missed. Here are our finest recommendations.

1. 1 Tyrwhitt Bistro Bar

We promise this isn’t a tourist trap bar. It’s an honest pub with a great menu and beer fare at an affordable price point. The Black Truffle Egg Pizza ($23.80) is deliciously aromatic, and the Black Truffle Cream Mushrooms Pasta ( ($19.80) is a fungi dream come true.

Check the happy hour deals like 1-for-1 pint on select beers to keep the good times going. It is pretty packed at night, so we recommend an advanced reservation.

Address: 1 Tyrwhitt Rd., Singapore 207522

Hours: 3:00 PM – 10:30 PM daily

2. Chye Seng Huat Hardware

Even if you disregard the hipster hype and aesthetic and the cool name and history, this cafe with its own roastery, knows its coffee and pairings seriously well. Take a seat at the counter and watch how the baristas do their magic. The daily specialty brew starts at $4.5, and the latte is at $6. With a slight bitterness, their coffee does give that punch that you need. We warned you. They’re serious about their caffeine offerings.

We also love the all-day breakfast like the oat Milk Muesli ($12), and the Samsui Chicken Soba ($18) is a lip-smacker. You can resist the urge to take photos of their dimly-lit interior and the chic mix of modern and traditional (If you can). Don’t forget to bring home a freshly roasted bag of PPP Throwback ($19.50).

Address: 150 Tyrwhitt Rd, Singapore 207563

Hours: 8:30 AM – 10:00 PM (Mon-Thu), 7:00A AM – 10:00 PM (Fri), & 8:00 AM – 10:00 PM (Weekends)

3. Druggists

For the love of craft beer, natural wines, and fine cocktails and their complexities, Druggists is a former traditional pharmacy that now serves medicines in fortified form. With the wild range of drinks from cult breweries & distillers from around the globe and well-executed grub list, a visit here is one to remember.

Pick the Love Me Tender Burger of Iberico pork ($20) for an elevated burger experience and the Chick To Thai For ($14) to pair up with your selected fresh beer on tap. From lager to stout, fruity to hoppy, it’s solid beer heaven.

Address: 119 Tyrwhitt Road, Singapore 207547

Hours: 4:00 PM – Midnight (Mon-Thur) and 3:00 PM – Midnight (Fri-Sun)

4. Apartment Coffee

You know those Sunday mornings when you need to nurse a hangover from the night before? Or you’re just up for a slow weekend and wind down with a good cuppa, a pair of sunnies, and some quiet time? Apartment Coffee is like a home that just feels your vibe. Awashed in a white interior, cozy seating spaces, and natural lighting, ask the barista to make you a fresh brew ($4-7 depending on the beans and roast), and you’ll forget your existential crisis.

Take a peek at their baked selection, and you won’t be disappointed. They also do monthly coffee bean subscriptions if you’re up for an impressive coffee ritual at home. We suggest coming over earlier in the day to avoid the pack of people.

Address: 161 Lavender Street, #01-12, Singapore 338450

Hours: 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM daily.

5. Two Bakers

At 88 Horne Road, brunch and pastries are the lead stars. With an extended brunch service until 3 PM, the Two Bakers Breakfast ($28) and the Fried Chicken Sandwich ($20) will fill your comfort food appetite. Helmed under Le Cordon Bleu Paris-trained chefs, you can expect unforgettable desserts like the Earl Grey Pear ($8) and the Raspberry Chocolate Cake (from $8).

Bring along the ladies (and gents) who brunch and they won’t be disappointed. Oh, the whole cakes are at 15% off this July.
