We all know that Joo Chiat is steeped in rich history, being Singapore’s first Heritage Town. It is virtually synonymous with Peranakan cuisine, stalwart eateries, heritage trail of shophouses, and a lively neighborhood. But what makes it even more charming is the heady mix of the old and new.
There’s always something new that creates buzz on the East Coast. And with the slew of awesome-looking restaurants and cafes, it could be a hit or miss most of the time. And what do we do? We checked them out for you. Here’s what we’ve been raving about lately.
1. Cafe Natsu
If you daydream about Studio Ghibli-esque Western food with a Japanese flair, Cafe Natsu is an endorphin surge. Set in a flapper-era heritage building and finished with tea-colored furnishings and a warm-hued interior, you should be rummaging for your camera phone to take some snapshots for Instagram.
Don’t think about it; pick the Chicken Katsu Sando ($26) or the Wagyu Beef Short Rib Sando ($30). If you want to start your day with a sweet treat, the Souffle Pancake with peach, litchi honey, and almond ice cream ($23) is divine. Pair it with a black brew from Kohi ($6.05).
Address: 283 Joo Chiat Road, Singapore 427537
Hours: 9:00 AM – 4:00 PM, 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM (Tuesday – Sunday)
2. Hello Arigato
A strong contender in the Japanese cafe battle, Hello Arigato is a friendlier spot with Scandinavian furnishings and a well-executed menu that they prepare with panache. If you have an eye for designer pieces, you’ll envy their collection of Louis Poulsen, Vitra, and the like.
But, we were there for the grub and gulp. The sandos of Wagyu ($55) and Gyu of Angus Beef Striploin ($26) are their strongest weapons to win your heart. The Tamago Sando ($14) is also a feast for the eyes and the taste buds. Best paired with an iced Black Coffee (($6).

3. PS. Cafe
Not far from Joo Chiat, PS. Cafe and their famous Truffle Shoestring Fries and PS. Big Breakfast ($27) has arrived in Katong. Exuding a refreshing and bright interior, high ceilings, and a pet-friendly outdoor terrace, it’s a nice community spot, perfect for people-watching.
An exclusive offering of Bali Beef Cheek Rendang ($29), Original Laksa Leaf Pesto Spaghetti ($26), and the PS. Katong Chendol Panna Cotta($15) is immensely satisfying.

4. Plain Vanilla East Coast
Followers of this long-established brand would rejoice on the East Coast. Their sixth outlet in the hip Katong is well-known for its baked goods and an extensive brunch menu. You’ll be welcomed in an embracingly cozy ambiance, and be sure to find a nice quiet spot.
The mainstay favorites are the House Blend Granola Bowls ($12), Smashed Avocado Toast ($22), and the sumptuous Chicken Pesto Orrochiette ($24). It would be a shame not to dessert on Earl Grey Lavender or Salted Caramel Cupcakes!

5. Supernova
The most recent addition to the astronomically baptized cafes of the same managing group of cult favorites like Atlas, Columbus, and Apollo, you can expect nothing short of fantastic from Supernova.
Stylish, modern, and with lots of natural lights complement the hearty servings of The Steak Hash ($26) and other brunch bestsellers like the Chicken French Toast ($24.50), and Boeuf Bourgignon-esque Eggs in Meurette ($24) won’t disappoint.
