We won’t be surprised if you haven’t heard of this ulu neighborhood. But if you’re gallivanting around Choa Chu Kang and have some time to squeeze in a little foodie exploration, Yew Tee, quiet it may be, has some good stuff that are not just deliciously satisfying but are also budget-friendly. Here are 5 of the hidden gems we stumbled upon that we always keep coming back to.
1. Feng Zhen Lor Mee
Having been featured in various media and food articles, Feng Zhen Lor Mee is a stalwart of Yew Tee and just recently expanded operations in Bukit Merah. Run by a family that has been serving up unique-tasting Lor Mee since 1997, you’ll delight in their masterful Lor Mee creations, and we highly recommend the Yuan Yang Fish Lor Mee ($5.50) which is an ensemble of large chunks of fried fish, egg, and pork belly slices that complement the flavorful noodles in a pool of rich gravy.

2. Ah Boy Chicken Rice
Many years ago, celebrity chef Eric Teo called Ah Boy’s the best chicken rice, and they uphold the same great taste even to this day. Simple as they seem, chicken rice is prepared with great attention to detail. While their roasted one is outstandingly crispy and moist on the inside, it is their poached chicken rice ($3) that we love the most. The skin is glistening and jelly-like, and the moist meat is tender and sweet, which pairs well with their fluffy and aromatic rice.

3. Ah Chew Yong Tau Fu
Conveniently located near Yew Tee Square, hop off and take a healthy respite on their set menus that highlight yong tau fu creations. We recommend their well-balanced soup of tau fu, fishball, hard-boiled egg, earthy enoki mushrooms, fragrant fish paste, and xiao bai cai in a robust broth that will perk you up without the guilt.

4. San De Green Vegetarian
With quite a vast fully vegetarian menu, San De is a frequent stop by many for lunch and supper for its consistently good and affordable dishes, such as the innovative Vegetarian Pig’s Trotter (we promise, there isn’t a morsel of pork in it), their popular Economic RIce, and their Lotus Root Soup that draws the eager queue.

5. Boon Lay Power Nasi Lemak
The popular authentic Malay restaurant in Boon Lay Place has an extended dining spot in Yew Tee Point. Their Nasi Lemak Wing Set ($4.95) has crispy chicken with moist and juicy meat, fragrant coconut rice, and the sweet and piquant sambal is satisfyingly hot and packed with flavor, plus the usual suspects of ikan bilis and peanuts. Throw an otah to give your meal that extra oomph!
